Life is full of big decisions and one of the most important ones might be whether to go to college, start a business or do both. Each path has its own unique benefits and the right choice depends on your passions, goals and circumstances. I want to share my own journey to help you decide what’s best for you.
The Value of a College Education
I chose to go to college because I wanted to be the first in my family to graduate and I was fortunate to receive a full-tuition academic scholarship. College was an incredible experience — it taught me discipline, exposed me to people from all over the world and gave me a wealth of knowledge. I pursued a degree in Accountancy, partly because society said accountants make good money and also because I wanted to see more Latinas in the field.
While my degree led to a successful 10-year career in taxes and accounting, I later realized my true passion was in marketing and the nonprofit sector. Back then, marketing wasn’t as big as it is today with social media and content creation but I now see how much I enjoy it. Looking back, I wish I had followed my passions sooner but I also recognize that college was an invaluable investment in myself. No one can take away the knowledge and experiences I gained. Attending college also gives you opportunities to study abroad, earn scholarships and even move away from your hometown to grow in new ways. Thousands of dollars in scholarships are available — don’t let a lack of funding stop you from going to college! If you need help applying, my Ultimate Scholarship Guide provides the tools and strategies to help you win scholarships and fund your education.

The Entrepreneurial Path: Starting a Business Instead of College
If you have a strong passion for something and a clear vision, starting a business early can be an incredible path. I didn’t start my business until years after college and while I wish I had done it sooner, I know I wasn’t ready back then. Fear of the unknown and self-doubt held me back, but I’m proud that I finally took the leap.
If you already have an idea and the drive to build something of your own, don’t let fear stop you. Entrepreneurship teaches you resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills that are just as valuable as a formal education. Many successful entrepreneurs never went to college, proving that with dedication and the right mindset, you can carve your own path and achieve success on your terms.
The Best of Both Worlds: Doing College and Business Together
Looking back, I now realize that college is a prime environment for entrepreneurship. You’re surrounded by thousands of students — potential customers, collaborators and supporters. You have access to mentors, networking opportunities and even funding resources. While managing both college and a business can be demanding, the benefits are well worth the effort.
If you’re passionate about both education and business, you don’t have to choose one over the other. College can provide a strong foundation while you build your business on the side. The key is to follow your passions and dreams because when you do what you truly love, you won’t regret it. And remember, it’s never too late to start. Whether you pursue college first and business later, or vice versa, your journey is uniquely yours.
Final Thoughts
If you’re standing at a crossroads, wondering which path to take, trust yourself. Whether you choose college, entrepreneurship or both, invest in yourself, follow your passions and embrace the journey. Success isn’t about following a single formula — it’s about pursuing what truly excites and fulfills you.
No matter when or how you start, your dreams are worth chasing. And the best part? It’s never too late to begin.
What path will you choose?
